We’re at the time of year again where many of us feel intuitively guided to help our fellow human. Unfortunately, we’re also at the time of year where viral videos circulate of helping those in need for likes and attention. This is often harmful to the person receiving the attention.

For a moment, I want you to imagine being in a situation of devastating struggle. I want you to imagine your lowest point of mental health, of hopelessness and insecurities. Now, imagine being at this place and having a person with a camera or their phone recording your reaction for their “good behavior.” It’s hurtful. It’s disgusting. It does not raise awareness to those in need because you already know they need the help. It just makes a person donating their time, money or effort for likes and praise *seem* like a Good Samaritan. Instead of what they really are, a person with some type of stunt for “good person internet points.”

You may think, “but if I were truly hopeless and having a camera in my face was what I had to tolerate in order to eat or feel clothed then I’d do it.” But that’s wrong too... that makes it seem as though the person in need of help also needs to entertain you for their supper. It’s degrading. Struggle of any kind already makes you question your value. Do not add to a person feeling devalued.

Instead, encourage others to donate their time, energy, or money to places or people who could really use it. That’s a way to educate without humiliating those who are struggling.

The difference between ego and God is ego is the source of “I, me, my.” God is “we.” So if you find yourself saying, “I did this really amazing thing for a poor unfortunate soul” then you are already separating yourself from another human, placing your ego on a pedestal and expecting praise for human decency. Remember, WE are in this together. We are here to help each other through life and We have the power to change lives with or without a camera for proof. That’s all.

Find a charity or person in need to donate what you can. Also, you do not need to wait for the holidays to do this. People struggle all year round.

Let’s make the world a better place because WE are in it. ❤️
